Our Farm
Located in Apponagansett Bay on the Southcoast region of Massachusetts, Padanaram (Paid-un-air-um) Oyster Farm is located in its name-sake Padanaram Harbor, which was voted #1 harbor in the US in 2019. The high tidal flow, superb water quality and sheltered location promote exceptional growth of our premium oysters.
What we grow and how we grow it
Padnaram Oyster Farm LLC, cultivates American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) using floating and submerged gear. The gear is best described as floating mesh bags and cages that are attached to a long-line that is strung between buoys.
Thanks to wind, wave and tide action the oysters growing in the gear are gently "tumbled". This tumbling action combined with our culling and thinning activity leads to a high-quality oyster with a deep cup, full meats, consistent size and hard shells.
Why Oysters?
Oysters are not only delicious but they are among the most nutritious proteins that you can eat. Whether raw on the half-shell, baked, grilled or stewed, oysters were once a staple of the New England diet and thanks to growth in the farming community are becoming more accessible every year. Oysters are also known as a key-stone species for the marine eco-systems that that they populate. In addition to the ability of one adult oyster to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, they provide critical habitat for a number of marine species and through oyster reef restoration efforts that are underway up and down the Eastern US coast, oysters are being viewed as part of the response to increased incidents of coastal flooding and storm damage. The combined ecosystem services, culinary versatility and nutritional value of oysters is a win, win, win for our coastal communities.
